BTC price news: What next as Bitcoin falls below $66,000 - CoinDesk
First-Order — What Happened
Bitcoin dropped to a low of $65,708 during Asian morning trading on Wednesday, representing a 6.4% decline over 24 hours, with prices hovering around $67,175. The sell-off is occurring against a backdrop of rising traditional equity markets, highlighting a notable divergence between crypto and stock performance.
Second-Order — Chain Reaction
The decoupling of Bitcoin from equities suggests crypto-specific selling pressure, potentially driven by profit-taking, leverage liquidations, or shifting risk appetite within the digital asset space. A sustained decline below key support levels could trigger cascading margin calls across leveraged crypto positions, amplifying downward momentum and spilling over into altcoins and DeFi protocols. This divergence may also prompt institutional investors to reassess portfolio allocation strategies between traditional and digital assets.

What to Watch
Investors should monitor the $65,000 psychological support level closely, as a breach could accelerate selling toward the $60,000–$62,000 range where significant historical support exists. Watch for on-chain data including exchange inflows, funding rates, and open interest to gauge whether this is a short-term correction or the beginning of a deeper trend reversal. Additionally, any macro catalysts such as Fed commentary, CPI data, or equity market volatility could either stabilize or exacerbate the crypto sell-off.
